Franklin County, Washington

Franklin County is a county located in the State of Washington. As of 2000, the population is 49,347. The county seat is at Pasco.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,277 km² (1,265 mi²). 3,218 km² (1,242 mi²) of it is land and 59 km² (23 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.81% water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 49,347 people, 14,840 households, and 11,604 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (40/mi²). There are 16,084 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 61.91% White, 2.49% African American, 0.73% Native American, 1.62% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 28.98% from other races, and 4.14% from two or more races. 46.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,840 households out of which 45.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.80% are married couples living together, 11.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.80% are non-families. 17.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.26 and the average family size is 3.67.

In the county, the population is spread out with 34.60% under the age of 18, 10.90% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 17.90% from 45 to 64, and 8.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 109.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 108.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,991, and the median income for a family is $41,967. Males have a median income of $32,209 versus $24,533 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,459. 19.20% of the population and 15.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 26.00% are under the age of 18 and 7.70% are 65 or older.
