Edward of Portugal

The eldest son of King João and Philippa of Lancaster[?], Edward (Duarte in Portuguese) was knighted at the capture of Cueta[?] in 1415, and succeeded to the Portuguese throne in 1433. A reflective and scholarly prince, he wrote the treatise O Leal Counsellor (The Loyal Counsellor) and was in the process of revising the Portuguese law code. However in 1437 Duarte's brother Dom Henriques (Henry the Navigator) persuaded him to launch an attack on Morocco and thus win an African base for future African exploration. The resulting attack on Tangier[?] was a fiasco, in which Duarte's youngest brother Dom Fernando, Duke of Braganza was captured. The king died of plague soon afterwards.
