Douglas County is a county located in the State of Wisconsin. As of 2000, the population is 43,287. Its county seat is Superior[?]6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,833 km² (1,480 mi²). 3,391 km² (1,309 mi²) of it is land and 442 km² (171 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 11.54% water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 43,287 people, 17,808 households, and 11,272 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km² (33/mi²). There are 20,356 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.35% White, 0.57% African American, 1.82% Native American, 0.63% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 17,808 households out of which 29.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.10% are married couples living together, 10.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.70% are non-families. 29.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.60% under the age of 18, 10.30% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 14.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 97.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.40 males.
