Charlotte County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 141,627. Its county seat is Punta Gorda, Florida6.

History Charlotte County was created in 1921. It was named for the Bay of Charlotte Harbor.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,225 km² (859 mi²). 1,796 km² (694 mi²) of it is land and 429 km² (166 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 19.27% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 141,627 people, 63,864 households, and 44,130 families residing in the county. The population density is 79/km² (204/mi²). There are 79,758 housing units at an average density of 44/km² (115/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.58% White, 4.39% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.85% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.79% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 3.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 63,864 households out of which 17.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.20% are married couples living together, 7.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.90% are non-families. 26.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.18 and the average family size is 2.56.

In the county the population is spread out with 15.70% under the age of 18, 4.50% from 18 to 24, 18.80% from 25 to 44, 26.40% from 45 to 64, and 34.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 54 years. For every 100 females there are 91.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,379, and the median income for a family is $42,653. Males have a median income of $30,309 versus $22,273 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,806. 8.20% of the population and 5.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.00% are under the age of 18 and 5.00% are 65 or older.
