Punta Gorda is a city located in Charlotte County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 14,344. It is the county seat of Charlotte County6.

Geography Punta Gorda is located at 26°54'57" North, 82°2'52" West (26.915907, -82.047820)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 47.9 km² (18.5 mi²). 36.7 km² (14.2 mi²) of it is land and 11.2 km² (4.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 23.32% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 14,344 people, 7,165 households, and 5,187 families residing in the city. The population density is 391.1/km² (1,012.8/mi²). There are 8,907 housing units at an average density of 242.9/km² (628.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.60% White, 3.17% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.78% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.59% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 1.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,165 households out of which 8.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.8% are married couples living together, 4.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.6% are non-families. 24.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.97 and the average family size is 2.27.

In the city the population is spread out with 8.2% under the age of 18, 2.1% from 18 to 24, 9.9% from 25 to 44, 33.4% from 45 to 64, and 46.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 64 years. For every 100 females there are 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $48,916, and the median income for a family is $54,879. Males have a median income of $34,054 versus $26,125 for females. The per capita income for the city is $32,460. 6.5% of the population and 4.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.9% are under the age of 18 and 3.0% are 65 or older.
