Butler County, Alabama

Butler County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of Captain William Butler, who fought in the Creek Wars[?]. As of 2000 the population was 21,399. Its county seat is Greenville.

History Butler County was established on December 13, 1819.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,015 km² (778 mi²). 2,012 km² (777 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.13% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 21,399 people, 8,398 households, and 5,870 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (28/mi²). There are 9,957 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 58.38% White, 40.81% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.39% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,398 households out of which 32.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.70% are married couples living together, 18.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.10% are non-families. 27.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.90% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 16.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 88.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $24,791, and the median income for a family is $30,915. Males have a median income of $28,968 versus $18,644 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,715. 24.60% of the population and 20.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 31.30% are under the age of 18 and 28.60% are 65 or older.
