Bristol Zoo

Located on Clifton Downs in Bristol, southwest England, Bristol Zoo is a Victorian walled zoo covering a relatively small area by modern standards, but with a diverse number of species represented. It was made notable by appearing in the UK TV series, Animal Magic[?], hosted by Johnny Morris[?].

Table of contents

Conservation The zoo is very active in conservation, with many 'exhibits' and features for learning about animal habitats, recycling and so on. It also actively participates in many zoo breeding programmes.

Animals There are many species of animals represented at the zoo, though these days they tend to be smaller mammals than those housed there in the past. There are no elephants, giraffe or anything of that nature, but two lions, plenty of monkeys, a great penguin and seal enclosure, insect house and a Twilight zone.

Wendy the Elephant

Sadly, Wendy the Elephant died in 2002 at some considerable age. There are no plans to house more elephants at Bristol Zoo. The elephant enclosure is being redeveloped to house okapis.

Lowland Gorillas

The three Lowland Gorillas at the zoo are the biggest animals still housed there. As well as an indoor enclosure, they have an entire island to themselves in the middle of the zoo.

Naked Mole Rat

The 'Twilight Zone' at the zoo houses many nocturnal animals. A particular favourite here are the naked mole rats, which are very much like bald, tailless rats. But cute.
