Brevard County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 476,230. Its county seat is Titusville, Florida6.

History Saint Lucia County was created in 1844. It was renamed Brevard County in 1855. It may have been named for Dr. Ephraim Brevard, who wrote the so-called Mecklenberg Declaration of Independence[?], or for George Washington Brevard, whe served as Florida State Controller from 1854 to 1860. The Space Coast, as Brevard County is known, is the home of the Kennedy Space Center. The area code for the area is (321), as in 3...2...1... Blast Off!

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,032 km² (1,557 mi²). 2,637 km² (1,018 mi²) of it is land and 1,395 km² (539 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 34.60% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 476,230 people, 198,195 households, and 132,394 families residing in the county. The population density is 181/km² (468/mi²). There are 222,072 housing units at an average density of 84/km² (218/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 86.81% White, 8.40% African American, 0.37% Native American, 1.50% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.09% from other races, and 1.77% from two or more races. 4.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 198,195 households out of which 26.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.00% are married couples living together, 10.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.20% are non-families. 26.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.84.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.00% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 27.10% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 19.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 95.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $40,099, and the median income for a family is $47,571. Males have a median income of $36,542 versus $24,632 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,484. 9.50% of the population and 6.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.00% are under the age of 18 and 6.50% are 65 or older.
