Ben Chifley

Joseph Benedict Chifley, usually known as plain Ben Chifley, (September 22, 1885 - June 13, 1951), was the 16th Prime Minister of Australia from 1945 - 1949.

He remains one of Australia's most influential Prime Ministers. Amongst his govenment's accomplishments whilst in office were the post-war immigration scheme under Arthur Calwell, the establishment of Australian citizenship in 1949, the Snowy Mountains scheme, the Commonwealth Bank, the national airline TAA, a social security scheme, and the Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO[?]).

During his terms as a Member of Parliament, he was the Federal Member for the electoral seat of Macquarie for fourteen years, a seat which at that time included his home town of Bathurst[?].
