Alpes-de-Haute-Provence is a French département. Located in the south of France, it was formerly part of the province of Provence.

History

  • One of the initial 83 French départements, created on March 4, 1790 as Nord de la Provence. It was later renamed Haute-Provence and Basses-Alpes.
  • On December 8, 1793, the Vaucluse département was created out of parts of the Bouches-du-Rhône, Drôme and Basses-Alpes départements.
  • On April 13, 1970, the département of Basses-Alpes was renamed Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.

Geography

Alpes-de-Haute-Provence is a mountainous region with peaks over 8,000 feet. The climate is very dry and arid that allows for a prosperous fruit growing industry.

It borders the Hautes-Alpes, Alpes-Maritimes, Var, Vaucluse and Drôme départements, as well as Italy.

Rivers include: Durance[?], Verdon[?], Bléone[?], Ubaye[?], Var, Buëch[?], Jabron[?], Largue[?].
