C.K. Yen was born in Suzhou[?], Jiangsu Province. He graduated from St. John's University[?] in Shanghai as a chemistry major.
Yen previouly served as minister of economic affairs, minister of finance, and governor of Taiwan Province. He was appointed premier in December 1963. In 1966 the National Assembly elected Yen as vice president. In 1972, he was re-elected vice president and succeeded as premier by Chiang Ching-kuo, who later succeeded him as president.
