Built to replace the Li-2(DC-3 variant) and the Il-14, it's main design feature was ease of operation outside major airport service areas. It' equipped with a built-in airstair and capable of STOL operations.
Since the demise of the old Aeroflot many have been converted from passsenger service layout to more luxorious corporate layouts and are in use as corporate an private aircraft.
Most of the Yak-40's in active service fly in the former Soviet Union, but some are flying in europe, but are rare because of noise restricions.
It's nickname is 'flying whistle', for the distinct engine sound it makes.
