Wilson County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 73,814. Its county seat is Wilson6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 969 km² (374 mi²). 961 km² (371 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.85% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 73,814 people, 28,613 households, and 19,771 families residing in the county. The population density is 77/km² (199/mi²). There are 30,729 housing units at an average density of 32/km² (83/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 55.83% White, 39.33% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.21% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 6.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 28,613 households out of which 31.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.10% are married couples living together, 16.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.90% are non-families. 26.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.60% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 28.80% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,116, and the median income for a family is $41,551. Males have a median income of $30,364 versus $21,997 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,102. 18.50% of the population and 13.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.70% are under the age of 18 and 21.30% are 65 or older.
