Wikipedia:WikiProject Swedish counties

This WikiProject is an attempt to formulate a common template for the Swedish counties. It suggests a structure for the county articles which would make them more structured, while also giving them a common look and feel.

Table of contents

Title WikiProject Swedish counties

Scope This WikiProject aims to structure the articles for the 21 counties of Sweden, their municipalities and cities. In parallell, but subjugated to the county project, the historical Provinces of Sweden will also be included.

Parentage The parent of this WikiProject is the WikiProject Countries

Descendant WikiProjects The descendant WikiProjects are WikiProject Swedish municipalities, WikiProject Swedish cities and WikiProject Swedish provinces.

Similar WikiProjects Similar WikiProjects are WikiProject U.S. States, WikiProject French departements and WikiProject Chinese provinces.

Participants

Coordination The effort should be coordinated with the Swedish Wikipedia.

Structure

The article should start with a good introduction, giving the name of the county, its location in Sweden, bordering counties, seas or lakes and such. Also give a few facts about the county.

Next, there is a table with quick facts about the county. A template for the table can be found at the bottom of this page. The contents are as follows:

 • The official name of the county in Swedish (xx län) is to go on top as the caption.
 • A picture of the county coat of arms, if possible with the royal crown attached. A good source is required for this. It should be no more than xx pixels in width.
 • County letter code: The letter code of the county.
 • Residence city: The seat of residence for the Governor (landshövding).
 • County council: The official name of the County council in Swedish. The name is often specific and follows no general rule.
 • Provinces: The province or provinces that the county historically was part of.
 • Land area: The area of the county in square km (km²) and the ranking.
 • Population: The number of inhabitants, the ranking and the population density. Also include a year for the census. See: County facts (http://www.gis.lst.se/lanskartor/)

The rest of the article should consists of a few short paragraphs. These paragraphs should give an outline of the history and politics etc. If the need arises the link to a full article is also provided for.

The heading should look like:

Municipalities
Main article: Municipalities of _

The sections are:

 • Province/Provinces - A brief description of the province or provinces to which the county belongs. This entry could deal with history, culture and geography but should not be exhaustive but rather refer to the entry for the province(s). More modern history, geography or culture that can not be refered to a province article should be fitted under any of the following appropriate headlines.
 • Administration - The administration and politics of a County has two distinctly different aspects. One is the central government administration of the county through the County Administrative Board or Länsstyrelse, which is lead by a Government appointed Governor or Landshövding.
 • Politics - The other aspect of the politics of a County is the County Council or Landsting, which is a regional municipal assembly appointed by the county electorate. In the case of Skåne and Västra Götaland the authority of the Regional Council or Regionfullmäktige instead of a County Council should be noted.
 • Municipalities - Basically a list of the Municipalities belonging to the county. Recent changes should also be denoted here.
 • Heraldry - This should include the blazon (blasonering) of the coat of arms for the county. A good source of the blazons translated into English is needed for this. (An alternative could be to give the blazon in Swedish, but please refrain from translating this if you don't have proficiency in the terminology used in heraldry!) A reference should also be made about the use of the arms. Particularly the use by Government agencies in the county like the County Administrative Board, with a Royal Crown and the County Council with-out any crown. There should be no disambiguation in to separate articles on heraldry for a County or a Province with the same name or coat of arms.
 • Miscellaneous topics - The initial posting for this project had separate headlines of Economy, Demographics and Culture. While a case could be made for these as separate headlines the appropriate place for these subjects are often in other articles. Economy more appropriately belongs in the Sweden entry or in a particular Municipality. Demographics belongs in the Sweden entry. Culture belongs either in the Sweden entry or in the Province entry. Otherwise put it under this headline.
 • External links - Links to official websites about the county. It should include the County Administrative Board and the County Council. It could also include links to Regional Associations of Local Authorities (Kommunförbund) and links to an official tourist site.

Template

When applying this template to a county stub or article (which already all exist), it should be common practice to create a temporary page to work on, with the following notice:

This temporary page is being used to expand and convert the article _ over to the new format proposed at WikiProject Swedish counties. Please feel free to add or edit anything on this page to help in the conversion process.

Don't forget to replace the "_" with the name of the article being converted.

To notify readers/writers that a new page is being created, place the following text on the country article itself:

A new page based on the new template is being worked on at _/Temp, please make any changes you want to make on that page.
