Wikipedia:WikiProject Birds (family taxobox example)

Hummingbirds
Scientific classification
Kingdom:Animalia
Phylum:Chordata
Class:Aves
Order:Apodiformes
Family:Trochilidae
Genera
Selasphorus
Elvira
Calypte[?]

Things to note:

  • Usually the taxobox heading is the common name of the family—in this case, "Hummingbirds"— in bold type. Note the plural. The article title, however, should always be in the singular.
  • If there is no suitable common name, use the scientific name instead.
  • Notice that the last entry in the list of genera (in this example it's Calypte) does not include the new line code <br>. All the other ones do.
  • Should we always link the genera? Or only those that seem likely to get an entry of their own soon?
  • Watch out for taxonomic issues. It's a minefield out there!
