Traditionally the bird order Apodiformes contained three families: the swifts, Apodidae, the tree swiftsHemiprocnidae, and the hummingbirdsTrochilidae.
In the Sibley-Ahlquist taxonomy, hummingbirds are separated from the Apodiformes as a new order Trochiliformes.
