The french wikipedia was hit by Iala (the malicious vandal hinted at below) on december 01, 02, 03 and 04. The damages were worse on the first two days, as there was only one sysop online and Iala used several IPs. The number of sysops was suddenly doubled, and our reverting job was made less a chore by Brion roll-back feature.
From that experience, which I consider a teaching experience, for obviously the vandalism could have been much worse, had the vandal, be using many different IPs, be loggued, be working at odd hours..., I renew my wish for a collection of automated controls to detect bots (which will never entirely solve the problem, but could lessen it), an centralized alarming system, features to slow down suspicious bots, and options for quick repair (such as the roll-back).
Of course, most of these require more cooperation between wikipedians, and a phase IV. I know...I know...
- We are extremely happy with the phase III software. The last few complaints are mostly dealing with a few english sentences left here and there. However, everything seems to be working just fine now. Thanks a lot.
- Thank you also for all those who are putting a lot of work in linking our pages. Tokerboy and (more or less identified) others are doing a great job.
- We closed our temporary mailing list, and a new mailing list is now opened. For those who speak french, you may wish to register to wikifr-l@wikipedia.org (/mailman/listinfo/wikifr-l), and consult the archives wikifr-l-archives (/pipermail/wikifr-l/)
- Currently under discussion : a potential bot is planned. It is meant to enter about 36000 entries, french cities. Very little information is currently available (postal code, population...); if you know of any source of free info to enrich the file, you're most welcome to help (Athymik and Tibo)...
- Also under discussion, the creation of three wiki.projects, one being a dictionnary of french-hieroglyph, another a french-english dictionary, and a third a japanese-french dictionary. Wikipedia-Projet (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia-Projet)
- Lots of discussion also about decision making being democratic voting process rather than consensus. A logo (http://fr.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Wikip%E9dia-Prise_de_d%E9cision%2C_Logo_du_Wikip%E9dia_francophone&diff=0&oldid=0) update (or change) is planned in the near future. We are also trying to quickly set up rules for disambigation matter to absorb some of the incoming english pages...
- Following some messages of the past week on the mailing list, I have not seen any discussion going on about images on the fr.wiki. I can't find back the message where somebody seems to refer to french stuff found on the german site, and to complain about a lack of info circulation. This is very fuzzy to me, have not found anything going on about images really.
- it was just a short notice at [1] (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia%3ADiskussion) about Aoinekos photos which I stumbled across in the fr.wiki and kpjas obviously found this notice. --Elian
