Some older web browsers cannot correctly edit long pages, where the bottom parts are not displayed. So, if you save this edit, these undisplayed parts are deleted.
A possible solution is to keep entries' size below 32Kb (see page size).
However, there are very easy ways to fix this by simply updating to a newer browser. The maximum page size problem is specific to certain older browsers, in particular, Netscape 4.76 and below, and old versions of Opera.
- Users of Mozilla: Mozilla has no known problems with editing long articles. If you're using Mozilla already, you probably don't need to worry. If you do encounter issues, you may want to make sure that you have the latest stable version; as of June 2003, Mozilla 1.3.1 (http://www.mozilla.org/) is the latest stable version. Mozilla is available for most platforms, and is updated regularly.
- Users of Netscape: Netscape 4.76 and earlier have difficulties editing long articles, and a number of other drawbacks as well. If you are using one of these versions, you may want to upgrade to a newer version of Netscape. As of June 2003, Netscape 7.0 (http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/download.jsp) is the latest version. It has excellent supports for the style sheets Wikipedia uses, and a number of other nice features. If you like Netscape, you may want to consider switching to Mozilla, which is a smaller and generally more efficient implementation, and uses the same rendering engine that Netscape uses, so the look and feel is similar. Netscape is available for most major platforms.
- Users of Opera: Upgrade to Opera 6.05 or higher. Earlier versions may have problems editing long articles. As of June 2003, Opera 7.11 (http://www.opera.com/download/) is the latest version. Of course, you don't have to be an existing Opera user to switch. The free version of Opera places a small ad in the upper right corner of your screen; an ad-free version costs US$39. Opera is available for most major operating systems.
- Users of other browsers: If your browser seems to be working okay, and does not have problems with editing long articles, then you probably don't need to worry. If you do encounter problems, you may want to see if there is a newer version of your preferred browser available. If this still doesn't work, and you want to be able to edit long articles, then the safest and easiest choice may be to simply switch to an up-to-date version of Mozilla, Opera, Netscape, or Internet Explorer.
