Whitney Township, Michigan

Whitney Township is a township located in Arenac County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 1,033.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 123.4 km² (47.7 mi²). 81.1 km² (31.3 mi²) of it is land and 42.3 km² (16.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 34.27% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,033 people, 437 households, and 319 families residing in the township. The population density is 12.7/km² (33.0/mi²). There are 894 housing units at an average density of 11.0/km² (28.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 98.94% White, 0.00% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.19% from two or more races. 2.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 437 households out of which 20.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.7% are married couples living together, 4.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.8% are non-families. 23.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.71.

In the township the population is spread out with 19.8% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 20.0% from 25 to 44, 31.5% from 45 to 64, and 24.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 50 years. For every 100 females there are 97.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.5 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $32,989, and the median income for a family is $37,679. Males have a median income of $39,375 versus $24,583 for females. The per capita income for the township is $18,326. 10.9% of the population and 9.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.5% are under the age of 18 and 7.4% are 65 or older.
