Arenac County, Michigan

Arenac County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 17,269. Its county seat is Standish6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,763 km² (681 mi²). 950 km² (367 mi²) of it is land and 813 km² (314 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 46.12% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 17,269 people, 6,710 households, and 4,717 families residing in the county. The population density is 18/km² (47/mi²). There are 9,563 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (26/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.38% White, 1.82% African American, 0.95% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. 1.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,710 households out of which 29.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.00% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% are non-families. 25.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.30% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 25.50% from 45 to 64, and 16.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 105.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,805, and the median income for a family is $39,033. Males have a median income of $31,205 versus $20,363 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,300. 13.90% of the population and 11.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 20.70% are under the age of 18 and 7.80% are 65 or older.
