Wayne County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 2,061,162. Its county seat is Detroit6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,741 km² (672 mi²). 1,591 km² (614 mi²) of it is land and 150 km² (58 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.64% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,061,162 people, 768,440 households, and 511,781 families residing in the county. The population density is 1,296/km² (3,356/mi²). There are 826,145 housing units at an average density of 519/km² (1,345/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 51.70% White, 42.16% African American, 0.37% Native American, 1.70% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.55% from other races, and 2.49% from two or more races. 3.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 768,440 households out of which 32.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.70% are married couples living together, 20.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.40% are non-families. 28.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.26.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.00% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 30.30% from 25 to 44, 20.90% from 45 to 64, and 12.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 92.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $40,776, and the median income for a family is $48,805. Males have a median income of $42,392 versus $29,027 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,058. 16.40% of the population and 12.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 23.00% are under the age of 18 and 11.30% are 65 or older.
