Ward County, North Dakota

Ward County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 58,795. Its county seat is Minot6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 5,326 km² (2,056 mi²). 5,213 km² (2,013 mi²) of it is land and 112 km² (43 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.11% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 58,795 people, 23,041 households, and 15,368 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (29/mi²). There are 25,097 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.40% White, 2.22% African American, 2.07% Native American, 0.82% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.70% from two or more races. 1.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 23,041 households out of which 34.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.20% are married couples living together, 8.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.30% are non-families. 27.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 13.00% from 18 to 24, 29.10% from 25 to 44, 19.20% from 45 to 64, and 12.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 99.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,670, and the median income for a family is $41,342. Males have a median income of $27,980 versus $19,830 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,926. 10.80% of the population and 7.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.50% are under the age of 18 and 8.40% are 65 or older.
