Wakulla County is a county located in the U.S. State of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 22,863. Its county seat is Crawfordville, Florida[?]6.

History Wakulla County was created in 1843. It was probably (not certainly) named for the Timucuan[?] Indian word for "spring of water."

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,906 km² (736 mi²). 1,571 km² (607 mi²) of it is land and 334 km² (129 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 17.54% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 22,863 people, 8,450 households, and 6,236 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (38/mi²). There are 9,820 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 86.10% White, 11.51% African American, 0.59% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 1.23% from two or more races. 1.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,450 households out of which 35.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.10% are married couples living together, 12.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.20% are non-families. 22.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.60% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 31.70% from 25 to 44, 24.70% from 45 to 64, and 10.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 107.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $37,149, and the median income for a family is $42,222. Males have a median income of $29,845 versus $24,330 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,678. 11.30% of the population and 9.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.40% are under the age of 18 and 15.10% are 65 or older.
