My name
IRL is Kasper Souren. I was born in
Nuth in
the Netherlands in
1976. I studied
mathematics in
Nijmegen where I received an
MSc. During one year I studied
sonology at
Royal Conservatory of The Hague. Right now I'm living in
Le Pre Saint-Gervais[?], a little town just outside the city borders of
Paris. I'm a
PhD student at the
IRCAM. The title of my thesis is "L'extraction de structures d'une pièce sonore à partir de descripteurs audio", or "The extraction of structure of a
musical piece starting from
audio descriptors[?]". The goal of the
thesis[?] is to create methods (in the form of software) to extract as many possible
structure from musical pieces:
similarity[?],
transformations[?],
discontinuities[?] on both micro- and macro-temporal
scale.
Languages
I try to understand and use Dutch, English, German and French. I also speak the Limburgian dialect[?].
I'm trying to learn some other languages, like Spanish, Italian, Slovio, Russian and Japanese.
Interests
I am vegetarian and since the 2003 animal disease (it seems there's one every year, BSE, aviairic influenza? or 'vogelpest') I am becoming more and more vegan. I am also actively trying to not give my money to corporations that I disaprove of, so I encourage the consumerium project.
I stopped using Microsoft Windows in the beginning of 2002. I'm a free software advocate, giving away Knoppix CD's and running Debian and Gentoo systems myself.
Music
I also like to make music. I play guitar and sitar, but my main instrument is my laptop.
