USS Leyte

Three United States Navy ships have been named USS Leyte, after the island of Leyte in the Philippines, off which the Battle of Leyte Gulf occurred in 1944.

The first Leyte was a Spanish gunboat[?] built in 1887 in Hong Kong and captured in the Spanish-American War.

The second Leyte (ARG-8) was a repair ship commissioned August 1944 and renamed Maui in May 1945 so as to make name available.

The third Leyte (CV-32) was an aircraft carrier commissioned 1946 and decommissioned 1959.
