UNSW was founded in 1949, as the "New South Wales University of Technology". Initially concentrating on engineering and science, it changed its name to the University of New South Wales in 1958, and adopted a wider range of courses. It now has the full range of studies including law, medicine, arts and economics.
UNSW currently has around 35,000 students and 5,000 full time staff. It has a high proportion of international students (around 20%), mostly from Asia.
