Uelzen (district)

Uelzen is a Kreis (district) in the northeastern part of Lower Saxony, Germany. Area 1454 km², population 97,600 (2001). The district's capital is Uelzen[?].

The district comprises the eastern part of the Lueneburg Heath[?] (Lüneburger Heide). The Ilmenau river has its source in the district. From here it runs northwards to the town of Lüneburg. The countryside is plain and sparsely populated.

Towns in the district: Uelzen[?], Bad Bevensen[?].

Note that Uelzen is always written with "ue" and never with "ü".
