Traffic light

A traffic light is a piece of street furniture, a signalling device positioned at road intersections and pedestrian crossings to indicate when it is safe to drive, ride or walk. There are three lights, a red one which means stop, a green one which means go and a yellow or amber one that means you should stop if you are able to safely do so.

Traffic lights for pedestrians are usually different, see pelican crossing.

Traffic lights at level railroad crossings are again different.

Other places where there may be traffic lights (normal or special ones):

  • at the landing-stage of a ferry and on the ferry
  • at the entrance and exit of a parking place or garage
  • before a bridge that can open
  • before a narrowing of the road
