Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 136.8 km² (52.8 mi²). 130.6 km² (50.4 mi²) of it is land and 6.2 km² (2.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.52% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,152 people, 2,420 households, and 1,747 families residing in the township. The population density is 47.1/km² (122.0/mi²). There are 6,199 housing units at an average density of 47.5/km² (122.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 92.34% White, 3.98% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.20% from other races, and 1.48% from two or more races. 5.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,420 households out of which 30.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.8% are non-families. 22.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the township the population is spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.0 males.
