Monroe County, Pennsylvania

Monroe County is a county located in the U.S. State of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 138,687. Its county seat is Stroudsburg6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,599 km² (617 mi²). 1,576 km² (608 mi²) of it is land and 23 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.44% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 138,687 people, 49,454 households, and 36,447 families residing in the county. The population density is 88/km² (228/mi²). There are 67,581 housing units at an average density of 43/km² (111/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 88.21% White, 6.02% African American, 0.21% Native American, 1.11% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.42% from other races, and 1.99% from two or more races. 6.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 49,454 households out of which 36.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.70% are married couples living together, 8.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.30% are non-families. 20.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.16.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 28.80% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 97.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.40 males.
