Thyroidectomy

A thyroidectomy is the surgical procedure of removing all or part of the thyroid gland. It is often performed when a person has thyroid cancer or some other condition of the thyroid gland.

The thyroid produces several hormones, such as thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine[?] (T3), and contains the parathyroid glands[?], which produce calcitonin[?].

When the thyroid is removed, oral synthetic thyroid hormones are usually prescribed to prevent the most serious manifestations of the resultant hypothyroidism. External Link
