The Province

The Province is a daily tabloid newspaper published in British Columbia by the Pacific Newspaper Group Inc[?], a CanWest Global Communications[?] Company. It has been a daily newspaper since 1898.

According to a recent NADbank survey, The Provinces average weekday readership was 520,100, making it British Columbia's most read newspaper. Its six-day average circulation was 167,746 copies a day (as of December 31, 2001). [1] (http://www.canada.com/vancouver/vancouversun/info/about)

History

In 1923, the Southam family bought The Province. By 1945 the paper's printers went out on strike. The Province had been the best selling newspaper in Vancouver, ahead of the Vancouver Sun and the News Herald. As a result of the six-week strike, it lost significant market share, at one point falling to third place. In 1957, The Province and the Vancouver Sun were sold to Pacific Press Limited which was jointly owned by both newspaper companies.
