Thane

Redirected from Thana

Thane (formerly Thana) is a city in Maharashtra,India adjoining Mumbai and the Arabian Sea. The first railway train in India ran from Bombay VT (Now Mumbai CST, See Mumbai) to Thana in 1853. Thane (or Thana) literally means "station" in Marathi the local language. This city derives its name from the fact that it was the only railway station besides Victoria Terminus[?]. Described as the city of lakes in old works, this city is almost a part of Mumbai. It is also plauged with the same problems as Mumbai is, viz, population explosion, inadequate infrastructure etc.
