It is the official language of the Republic of Tatarstan, a member of the Russian Federation, and is also spoken in the Siberian part of Russia as well as in China, Turkey and all over Central Asia.
There are approximately 7 million native speakers around the world. It is written using the modified Cyrillic script. Transition to modified Latin script started in 2000 and should be complete in 2011.
