Sussex County is a county located in the southern part of the U.S. State of Delaware. As of 2000 the population was 156,638. the county seat is Georgetown.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,097 km² (1,196 mi²). 2,428 km² (938 mi²) of it is land and 668 km² (258 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 21.58% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 156,638 people, 62,577 households, and 43,866 families residing in the county. The population density is 64/km² (167/mi²). There are 93,070 housing units at an average density of 38/km² (99/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 80.35% White, 14.89% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.75% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.02% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. 4.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 62,577 households out of which 27.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.90% are married couples living together, 11.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.90% are non-families. 24.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.50% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 25.60% from 45 to 64, and 18.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 95.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $39,208, and the median income for a family is $45,203. Males have a median income of $30,811 versus $23,625 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,328. 10.50% of the population and 7.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.00% are under the age of 18 and 8.40% are 65 or older.
