Kent County, Delaware

Kent County is a county located in the central part of the U.S. State of Delaware. As of 2000 the population was 126,697. The county seat is Dover, the state capital.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,072 km² (800 mi²). 1,527 km² (590 mi²) of it is land and 545 km² (210 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 26.30% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 126,697 people, 47,224 households, and 33,623 families residing in the county. The population density is 83/km² (215/mi²). There are 50,481 housing units at an average density of 33/km² (86/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 73.49% White, 20.66% African American, 0.64% Native American, 1.69% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.27% from other races, and 2.22% from two or more races. 3.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 47,224 households out of which 35.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.90% are married couples living together, 13.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.80% are non-families. 23.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.30% under the age of 18, 10.10% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 21.20% from 45 to 64, and 11.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 93.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $40,950, and the median income for a family is $46,504. Males have a median income of $32,660 versus $24,706 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,662. 10.70% of the population and 8.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.80% are under the age of 18 and 8.80% are 65 or older.
