Subsidy

A subsidy refers to fund given by the government to a private person or entity. Subsidies are often justified as being for a socially beneficial purpose, although economists point out that subsidies may often be socially detrimental.

Some subsidies include welfare and student loans[?].

It is the opposite of a tax.
