Subprefecture

Subprefecture is an administrative level that is below prefecture or province.

Albania There were (are?) ten Albanian prefectures, each of which is subdivided into eight to ten subprefecture.

Burkina Faso Examples: Djibasso Subprefecture

Chad Examples: N'Gouri Subprefecture, Chari-Baguirmi Prefecture, and Massakory Subprefecture.

China It was used in Qing Dynasty. Called ting (廳 or 厅) in Chinese, it is also on the same level as a department (州) and a district (縣). And is below prefecture (府).

Examples: Danshui Subprefecture (淡水廳 dan4 shui3 ting1), Taiwan; Ga'malan Subprefecture (噶瑪蘭廳 ga2 ma3 lan2 ~), Taiwan.

France

Sous-préfecture is the capital city of arrondissement. The civil servant in charge is the sous-préfet.

Examples: Aix en Provence, Apt, Arles, Bayonne, Boulogne-Billancourt, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Calais, Cambrai, Château-Thierry, Cherbourg, Le Havre, Narbonne, Reims, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Saint-Omer, Sedan, Vichy

Japan Japan also has subprefectures called 支庁 (shicho) or 庁 (cho) in Japanese depending on prefectures. They belong to prefectures and govern subordinate cities, towns or villages. Subprefectures are also translated as "Branch office" or "Branch of the Prefectural Government". See Subprefectures of Japan[?].

Turkey Examples: Hacibektas Subprefecture.

Vietnam Examples: Quang Hoa subprefecture, Thanh Hoa province
