Subduction

Redirected from Subduction zone

Subduction zones exist where an oceanic plate collides with a continental plate and sinks, below the latter plate, into the asthenosphere. Oceanic lithospheric plates are subducted because of their lower density. Subduction results in oceanic trenches.
