Stone Mountain is a city located in DeKalb County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,145.

Geography

The town is named for Stone Mountain, the largest exposed granite dome in North America. Stone Mountain harbors plant and animal life found no other place in the world. It is also the site of a famous giant carving commemorating the military leaders of the Confederacy as well as a state park and museum, including a steam railroad[?].

Stone Mountain is located at 33°48'19" North, 84°10'17" West (33.805255, -84.171413)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 km² (1.6 mi²). 4.2 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.62% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 7,145 people, 2,499 households, and 1,759 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,702.9/km² (4,423.4/mi²). There are 2,638 housing units at an average density of 628.7/km² (1,633.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 24.49% White, 69.21% African American, 0.21% Native American, 1.96% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.54% from other races, and 2.55% from two or more races. 4.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,499 households out of which 41.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.1% are married couples living together, 25.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.6% are non-families. 23.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.36.

In the city the population is spread out with 32.2% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 35.6% from 25 to 44, 17.1% from 45 to 64, and 5.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 86.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $38,603, and the median income for a family is $40,888. Males have a median income of $28,302 versus $28,854 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,130. 11.5% of the population and 9.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.2% are under the age of 18 and 7.1% are 65 or older.
