St. Francois County is a county located in the U.S. State of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 55,641. Its county seat is Farmington6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,172 km² (452 mi²). 1,164 km² (449 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.65% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 55,641 people, 20,793 households, and 14,659 families residing in the county. The population density is 48/km² (124/mi²). There are 24,449 housing units at an average density of 21/km² (54/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.14% White, 2.02% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 20,793 households out of which 32.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.90% are married couples living together, 11.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.50% are non-families. 24.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.00% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 29.40% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 103.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,199, and the median income for a family is $37,266. Males have a median income of $29,961 versus $19,412 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,273. 14.90% of the population and 11.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.80% are under the age of 18 and 11.50% are 65 or older.
