St. Clair County, Michigan

St. Clair County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 164,235. Its county seat is Port Huron6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,167 km² (837 mi²). 1,876 km² (724 mi²) of it is land and 291 km² (112 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 13.42% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 164,235 people, 62,072 households, and 44,629 families residing in the county. The population density is 88/km² (227/mi²). There are 67,107 housing units at an average density of 36/km² (93/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.96% White, 2.10% African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 1.38% from two or more races. 2.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 62,072 households out of which 34.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.40% are married couples living together, 10.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% are non-families. 23.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 30.00% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 12.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $46,313, and the median income for a family is $54,450. Males have a median income of $42,572 versus $25,880 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,582. 7.80% of the population and 5.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.30% are under the age of 18 and 8.30% are 65 or older.
