Southern League

The Southern League is a minor league baseball league which operates in the Southern United States. The original league was formed in 1885, but it had to shut down in 1899. A new league, the Southern Association, was formed in 1900, consisting of twelve teams. The Association ended in 1961. In 1965, the South Atlantic League (also known as the SALLY), changed its name to the Southern League and changed its status from D level baseball to AA. This league has continued since.

The league is divided into two divisions, the East Division and the West Division.

English football also has a Southern League, for semi-professional and amateur teams. Currently sponsored by Doctor Martens, the Premier division is two divisions below the Football League. Originally founded in 1900, the Southern League ran as one of three major amateur competitions (with the Isthmian League[?] and the Northern League) in tandem with the (professional) Football League until the professional game was broadened in the 1950s.
