Slackware

Slackware is a Linux distribution. Slackware takes a different approach than other popular distributions such as Red Hat, Debian, Gentoo, SuSE, and Mandrake Linux. (Partisans have been known to say, "When you know Slackware, you know Linux... when you know Red Hat, all you know is Red Hat".)

Slackware latest stable version is 9.0 at the moment of writing this, which include XFree86 4.3.0, Linux kernel 2.4.20, KDE 3.1, GNOME 2.2, and all the usual utilities. Additions include ProFTPD[?], OpenSSH and OpenSSL[?], mod_ssl[?] and mod_php[?], full support for the 2.4 kernel series, and many more. Slackware 9.0 is based on GCC 3.2.2.

There is also a -current version that can be used if you like bleeding edge[?].

The name "Slackware" stems from the term "Slack," as defined by the Church of the SubGenius.
