Shiner is a city located in Lavaca County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,070.

Geography Shiner is located at 29°25'51" North, 97°10'20" West (29.430856, -97.172115)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.3 km² (2.4 mi²). 6.3 km² (2.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.41% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,070 people, 882 households, and 572 families residing in the city. The population density is 327.6/km² (849.9/mi²). There are 1,016 housing units at an average density of 160.8/km² (417.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 85.60% White, 10.87% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.93% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 6.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 882 households out of which 26.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.1% are non-families. 33.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 22.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 28.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 80.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 74.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $28,205, and the median income for a family is $40,250. Males have a median income of $28,167 versus $17,426 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,942. 11.5% of the population and 7.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.7% are under the age of 18 and 21.0% are 65 or older.
