Lavaca County, Texas

Lavaca County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 19,210. Its county seat is Hallettsville6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,513 km² (970 mi²). 2,512 km² (970 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.05% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 19,210 people, 7,669 households, and 5,391 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km² (20/mi²). There are 9,657 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 86.86% White, 6.79% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 4.84% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 11.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,669 households out of which 30.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.70% are married couples living together, 9.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% are non-families. 27.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 6.90% from 18 to 24, 23.50% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 21.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 93.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,132, and the median income for a family is $36,760. Males have a median income of $26,988 versus $17,537 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,398. 13.20% of the population and 10.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.20% are under the age of 18 and 18.40% are 65 or older.
