Shelby County, Ohio

Shelby County is a county located in the U.S. State of Ohio. As of 2000, the population is 47,910. Its name is in honor of Isaac Shelby, Governor of Kentucky. Its county seat is Sidney6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,065 km² (411 mi²). 1,060 km² (409 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.43% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 47,910 people, 17,636 households, and 13,085 families residing in the county. The population density is 45/km² (117/mi²). There are 18,682 housing units at an average density of 18/km² (46/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.04% White, 1.49% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.97% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 17,636 households out of which 36.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.70% are married couples living together, 9.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.80% are non-families. 22.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the county, the population is spread out with 28.60% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 29.30% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 12.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 98.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $44,507, and the median income for a family is $51,331. Males have a median income of $36,212 versus $24,470 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,255. 6.70% of the population and 5.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.30% are under the age of 18 and 5.30% are 65 or older.
