Sheffield is a city located in Colbert County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 9,652.

Geography Sheffield is located at 34°45'35" North, 87°41'41" West (34.759721, -87.694592)1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.1 km² (6.6 mi²). 17.0 km² (6.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.46% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 9,652 people, 4,243 households, and 2,711 families residing in the city. The population density is 568.1/km² (1,471.4/mi²). There are 4,760 housing units at an average density of 280.2/km² (725.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 71.21% White, 26.21% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. 1.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,243 households out of which 27.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.3% are married couples living together, 16.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.1% are non-families. 32.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 85.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,673, and the median income for a family is $33,877. Males have a median income of $30,378 versus $18,033 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,022. 18.7% of the population and 16.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.5% are under the age of 18 and 10.4% are 65 or older.
