Colbert County, Alabama

Colbert County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of George and Levi Colbert, Indian chiefs. As of 2000 the population was 54,984. Its county seat is Tuscumbia.

History Colbert County was established on February 6, 1867.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,615 km² (624 mi²). 1,540 km² (595 mi²) of it is land and 75 km² (29 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.66% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 54,984 people, 22,461 households, and 16,037 families residing in the county. The population density is 36/km² (92/mi²). There are 24,980 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (42/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 81.52% White, 16.62% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. 1.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 22,461 households out of which 30.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.00% are married couples living together, 12.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.60% are non-families. 26.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 91.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,954, and the median income for a family is $39,294. Males have a median income of $32,112 versus $20,107 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,533. 14.00% of the population and 11.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.40% are under the age of 18 and 11.90% are 65 or older.
