Shaanxi (陝西 in pinyin: Shan3 xi1) (Wade-Giles: Shensi) is a province of Northwest China, and includes portions of the Loess Plateau on the middle reaches of the Yellow River as well as the Qinling[?] Mountains across the southern part of the province. The double a in Shaan is used to distinguish it from Shanxi. Shan = ?, xi = west.
